Power efficiency has long way to go, says HP

Virtualization Times - Mié, 04/14/2010 - 19:58

The IT and consumer electronics industries have a long way to travel in terms of improving power efficiency of electronic systems and devices, a Hewlett-Packard researcher argues in the latest issue of the Association for Computing Machinery's flagship journal.

"We've made tremendous progress over the past several years," said HP Labs distinguished technologist Parthasarathy Ranganathan, in an interview with IDG. "But when you look at the fundamental limits," the industry could make quantum leaps in efficiency, he said.

A Grid of Wind Turbines to Pick Up the Slack

Virtualization Times - Mié, 04/14/2010 - 19:58

Like most other sources of alternative energy, the wind can be intermittent. It does not blow uniformly, so power output from wind turbines rises and falls. And when the wind doesn’t blow at all, output drops to zero.

Intermittency is not much of a problem now in the United States, since there are relatively few wind farms and plenty of interconnected conventional power plants to pick up the slack when wind output falls, keeping the power supply stable.

Four Reasons Why CFOs Need a Plan for Energy Efficiency

Virtualization Times - Mié, 04/14/2010 - 19:58

A key finding of the report indicates that the energy-efficiency plan should include investments with a short payback period, such as installing lighting controls, in combination with larger energy efficiency projects such as voltage

What is Cloud 2.0?

Virtualization Times - Mié, 04/14/2010 - 19:55

When ENKI first entered the pay-as-you-go, on-demand, managed computing services market 4 years ago, the term "Cloud Computing" wasn't even in common use.  Since then, Cloud Computing has come to be commonly accepted to denote on-demand computing delivered over the Internet.   Businesses using applications in the cloud (SaaS, or Software-as-a-Service) have come to expect that they will not need to add any staff to manage those applications.  However, companies that want to use cloud computing to replace their in-house or colocated datacenters for production co

Can Data Centers benefit from Supply Chain Management concepts?

Virtualization Times - Mié, 04/14/2010 - 19:52

Currently, I am studying data center site selection, and have been asking the question what is wrong with data centers having 1% of the cost being in the land when other commercial real estate will typically have land 20-25% of the cost.  One big thing most miss is land is not a cost, it is a non-depreciable asset.
